November 2009 New Teacher Suggestion Of The Month

Strip Lists Streamline Paper Organization (And Help Reduce Paper Use, Too!)
Idea by Seri, 4th Grade Teacher, Fairfield, Connecticut:

Rather than using a whole piece of paper to record my class list, I type the list of names into three columns on one sheet of copy paper and then print out multiple copies of this page. I then use a paper cutter to divide the list of names into three separate "strip lists." When collecting homework, I simply highlight or cross off each child's name on a strip list and paper clip the strip list to the top of the stack. With just a glance, I know who did and did not hand in a paper.

This method also works great for keeping track of any and all papers the children need to return to me, such as open house notices, parent conference notices, etc. As an added bonus, I also taught my fourth graders how to use a strip list so they can collect assignments for me. It works great and they love to help!
